The province of Groningen urges minister to choose for wind farms in the area above the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands
The research report by BLIX shows that at least 10 gigawatts of wind power can be built in the area.
Offshore wind farm conditions in the Wadden Sea Area above Groningen are excellent. That is the outcome of the report, commissioned by the province of Groningen, and presented to the Minister of Economic Affairs.
The province of Groningen calls on the Minister of Economic Affairs to facilitate the realization of many more wind farms in the area above the Dutch Wadden Islands. This will contribute to a future without natural gas, a low carbon energy system and create hundreds of jobs.
Largest wind farm in the world
The research report by BLIX shows that at least 10 gigawatts of wind power can be built in the area above the Dutch Wadden Islands. This is more than 15 times the output of the Gemini wind farm, which is one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. With this, Groningen will make a huge contribution to a sustainable energy system for the Netherlands. In addition, offshore wind, combined with the existing energy infrastructure in Groningen and the developments around hydrogen, will give the Dutch energy transition a great boost. The realization of more wind power production in the area above the Wadden Islands is part of Groningen's offer, jointly made by the municipality of Groningen and the province of Groningen on March 8th, in response to the national government’s Energy Agenda. This offer significantly contributes to reducing national CO₂ emissions and achieving the ambitious energy goals.
In addition to climate mitigation benefits, wind conditions in the Wadden Sea Area also offer great economic opportunities, partly due to the creation of employment through the construction and maintenance of the wind farms. In addition, it becomes attractive for companies to settle themselves in the area’s vicinity. According to Nienke Homan, deputy of the province of Groningen for energy transition, companies can't wait to use this green energy. For Google, the availability of locally-produced renewable energy was an important factor in their decision to build their data facility in the Eemshaven. The presence of the right infrastructure also means that more and more companies want to locate themselves in the Northern Netherlands. This message is supported by our Northern partners, the provinces of Drenthe and Fryslân.
Support from the national government
Ultimately, the national government will determine the locations for offshore wind farms. Considering the enormous possibilities for wind energy utilisation above the Wadden Islands, the province calls on the national government to facilitate wind power in the area above the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands.
